Social Services

Under Section 2 of the Chronically Sick and Disabled Person's Act 1970, Social Services Departments have a statutory duty to arrange adaptations of people's homes. All disabled people are entitled to an assessment of their needs at home. An assessment will normally be carried out by an Occupational Therapist. Criteria vary throughout the UK. If you are eligible, Social Services may help you find the money to pay for changes or may pay for the work themselves if you cannot get other funding

Grants & Special Assistance Schemes

Foundations is the National Co-ordinating Body for Home Improvement Agencies in England. Their website describes the functions of Home Improvement Agencies as: "Home Improvement Agencies (HIAs) are not for profit, locally based organisations that assist vulnerable homeowners or private sector tenants who are older, disabled or on low income to repair, improve, maintain or adapt their home."

A report published on Oct 10th 2007 examines the potential role of a National Coordinating Body for Home Improvement Agencies.

Renovation grants are available for large-scale essential repairs like leaking roofs or rewiring. These are subject to means testing. Get details from your Local Council.

Disabled Facilities Grants (DFG's):
These are available from the local housing authority but are means tested. Two types are available - mandatory and discretionary. Mandatory DFG's are available for improvements to access, safety, facilities to make food, heating, power and lighting. The maximum amount has recently been increased to £30,000. A discretionary award can be made for such items if they cost more than £30,000. Contact your local housing authority.

Income support

You may be eligible for benefits to cover the costs of building work - such as income support and there are also discretionary social fund grants or loans.
