Research by Vienna University has confirmed that sufficient heat can be recovered from the Vienna Underground concrete linings to heat local offices and schools above the subway. In other work, a Scottish Company has also confirmed that it is possible to recove significant energy from conventional building foundations as the ground temperature is roughly constant a few metres below the surface.

News - Construction of a geothermal power plant in County Durham looks likely after water at a temperature of 46.2°C was found in the Eastgate Geothermal Exploration Borehole at a depth of 1000m. The source could supply heating for 4000 houses and business for up to 40 years. Parsons Brinkerhoff are consulting engineers.

In Southampton, several city-centre buildings are currently heated by saline water at around 76°C from an aquifer 1800m down.
